Tunisia Unveils Tender for 200 MW Solar Power Projects

Tunisia’s Ministry of Industry, Mines, and Energy has launched a new tender for the development of large-scale solar PV projects, with a total capacity of 200 MW.

Independent power producers (IPPs) selected through this process will enter long-term power purchase agreements (PPAs) with Société Tunisienne de l’Electricité et du Gaz (STEG), the state-owned grid operator. Developers interested in the opportunity have until January 15 to submit their proposals.

This tender is part of Tunisia's ongoing efforts to boost utility-scale solar energy production, following a series of similar initiatives. The most recent tender was launched in January 2023, and a 500 MW solar tender was completed in December 2019.

Despite these efforts, Tunisia's cumulative installed solar PV capacity reached only 506 MW by the end of 2023, according to the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA). However, the country made notable progress last year by adding 309 MW of new solar capacity, signaling a growing commitment to renewable energy expansion.
