Network solutions company Alcemi has been granted planning permission to develop "one of the largest energy storage facilities in Europe".
Construction of the 2-hour 500MW/ 1000mwh energy storage facility will begin in the coming months, subject to a final investment decision.
The project will be developed through its flagship fund in partnership with renewable energy investment company Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP) and is planned to be located in Coalburn, southeast of Glasgow, Scotland.
Alcemi chose the project's location in order to support the national transmission system by limiting the impact of network constraints. The group said the project had "undergone an extensive environmental impact assessment to ensure it meets the highest sustainability and safety standards". The site is also expected to benefit from landscaping measures to limit the visual impact of the project site.
Sister website Solar Power Portal previously reported that Alcemi and CIP have partnered to develop, build and operate a 4GW portfolio of UK energy storage assets in March 2022. This 500MW energy storage project is the result of this partnership and will contribute to this growing portfolio.
However, this is not the only partnership CIP is seeking in the UK. Earlier this year, CIP entered into a similar partnership with Amberside Energy to develop 2GW of solar and battery Energy storage systems (BESS) projects across the UK.
