Varco Energy has announced the successful commissioning and start of full commercial operations of its 57MW/138MWh Native River Battery Energy Storage System (BESS), strategically located near Liverpool in the Mersey Ring section of the UK’s electricity grid.
The Native River facility, utilising advanced lithium-ion battery technology, is designed to deliver essential grid-balancing services and support the National Energy System Operator (NESO) in maintaining a stable and resilient power supply. With a capacity of 57 megawatts and 138 megawatt-hours, the site plays a critical role in smoothing power fluctuations caused by the growing share of intermittent renewable energy sources.
The launch of Native River marks a key milestone in Varco Energy’s broader commitment to accelerating the UK's transition to a net-zero power system. According to the company, it plans to energise a further 250MW of assets over the next 18 months, with an additional 275MW currently in its development pipeline.
The project reinforces the UK’s momentum toward decarbonisation while highlighting the growing role of battery storage in enabling a cleaner, more reliable energy future.
