Adebisi Osim, President of the Association of Professional Women Engineers of Nigeria (APWEN), has urged the Federal Government to boost its budget for renewable energy sources such as solar, wind, and hydropower in order to alleviate the strain on the national grid.
Osim made these remarks during the second day of the 2024 International Conference Exhibition and Annual General Meeting of APWEN, held at Summit Hill in Calabar, Cross River State, on Tuesday.
She emphasized that investing in smart grids and energy-efficient technologies could significantly reduce carbon emissions. Additionally, Osim called for the development of policies that promote public-private partnerships. These initiatives would not only ease the burden on the national grid from power consumers but also ensure that rural and underserved communities gain access to reliable energy, fostering inclusivity and driving economic growth.
Addressing the theme “Engineering Innovations and Energy Security for a Sustainable Future,” Osim urged the government to make the energy crisis, which has long afflicted Nigeria, a top priority. “We must commit to sustainable energy solutions and leverage our engineering expertise to build resilient energy infrastructure,” she stated.
She further advocated for policies that support renewable energy initiatives and strengthen public-private collaborations to enhance energy access nationwide. “It’s essential to explore innovative engineering solutions that can tackle these challenges and secure a sustainable future for our country,” she added.
Osim concluded by highlighting the readiness of the engineering community to lend their expertise and knowledge to the government in addressing the nation’s energy challenges.
